A year after elevated lead levels were detected, University Park residents still unable to consume water without restrictions

Water supply company distributes bottled water, pitcher and faucet filters and filter replacements as fastest way to address high levels of lead in municipal drinking water.

When University Park’s water supplier notified residents in June 2019 that elevated lead levels had been detected in samples taken from some of their homes, the company cautioned it might be “a few weeks” before they could safely consume tap water without restrictions.

More than a year later, roughly 1,500 Aqua Illinois customers remain under the lead advisory and the company’s progress eradicating the contamination appears to have stalled.
